High Dependancy Care for babies
When will my baby need to stay and be cared for here?
Not every maternity hospital in the uk hosts a Nicu unit.If you baby needs this type of care when baby is born and there isn't one near to your home don't be surprised if baby is transfered to the nearest one away from your local area.
(HD) care. For babies who are not critically sick but still need an indepth care package on this unit.even though your baby may need highly specialised care, you should be able to see them – even if you can’t hold them for a while – and will be kept closely in touch with the care and treatment they are receiving. Depending on the unit, you may even be able to sleep next to, or close by, your baby.
The care your baby recieves in this part of the baby unit could be..
- respiratory support (eg non invasive ventilation)
- invasive cardiovascular monitoring and fluid management
- inotropic support
- close observation and monitoring
- acute pain management
- need more in-depth care and observation, such as after an operation, or those who have a single failing organ system, such as the kidneys.
